[tab title=”EN”]Guillermo del Toro’s film: The Shape of Water When I first watched The Shape of Water trailer, I thought that it was an original concept but I wasn’t sure I was going to like the movie. The night I went to the movies, I was surprised by the story.
The movie of Mexican Guillermo del Toro, tells the story of how Elisa’s life takes an unexpected turn. Elisa is a young woman who works as a concierge of a laboratory in Baltimore. She finds out about a secret experiment the American government is working on, in its quest to defeat the USSR. She did not imagine that the object of the experiment was in fact an amphibious creature with whom, and in spite of all the differences, she would end up by falling in love.

Facts you must know about The Shape of Water:

1 The idea had been on Guillermo’s mind since he was 6 years old and watched Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954); the love the creature felt for the woman moved him so much that he had hope they would end up together, and when it did not happen, he came up himself with a story that had the end he always expected.

“It’s a movie about our reality, the tension we’re all living internationally.” (Del Toro)

2 The film is set in 1960s decade and depicts the american dream, but it also refers to the reality we’re living in. With this movie, the Mexican director seeks to lead the audience to social awareness of tolerance and love of one’s neighbor.

“The movie is a call to acceptance, to love for another.” (Del Toro)

3 The making of the creature took 3 years. Del Toro and his team made very thorough decisions about its traits and peculiarities; they didn’t consider it a monster, but the main character for which they would create and define specific characteristics.

4 It took 9 months to choose the film’s soundtrack that goes from 1930s songs and even a contemporary version from La Javanaise.

5 At the beginning, Del Toro thought about a black-and-white movie, for which he would have used a smaller budget. Nonetheless, he finally decided to make it in color, honoring Federico Fellini’s words: “I’m going to make color a narrative tool”.

“It is so beautiful when someone acts with the eyes.” (Del Toro)

6 Guillermo del Toro wrote Elisa Esposito’s character especially for Sally Hawkins; he went through all her film and television career and it wasn’t until he watched Submarine (2010) that he was fully convinced she was the one for Elisa’s part.

7 Del Toro was behind “the vocals” of the amphibian creature. He made the breathing sounds of the protagonist.

8 The film won the Leone d’Oro in Venice Film Festival, which it had never happens for a fantastic genre film. It also got 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Achievement in Directing and Best Motion Picture of the Year.

Considered the best film of Del Toro so far, The Shape of Water is a reminder to us that love can come in any shape and size, but over all, that everyone deserves a chance to be respected and to have the freedom of being who they truly are.
