Eventually, she became independent making a life of giving performances where she used to sing Ko ko rico and Qui qu’a vu Coco?, songs that inspired her artistic name, Coco Chanel. Her determination to achieve her goals, allowed her to start her carrier within fashion clothing industry, by first selling hats the she crafted herself and after, by opening her first clothing boutique at Rue Cambon. Coco Chanel innovated in fashion world with a very particular style of her own: she eliminated the corset, she tailored the classic Chanel jersey, she shortened skirts length and imposed the pearls as one of the brand hallmarks.

[tab title=”EN”]Margaret Thatcher Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Her conservative ideas and strong character got her to be referred as the Iron Lady, specifically for her restless determination to go against communism. She was particularly remembered for having being the first to command English troupes in the defense against Argentinian occupation of Falkland Islands, as well as for the implementation of conservative policies, which went by the name of Thatcherism. She was the first British woman to reach a high position within politics and over all, she was a woman who awoke conflicting emotions in her nation; a nation that was divided in two poles: the ones who disagreed with her and ther ones who believed in her and gave her their full support.

[tab title=”EN”]Malala Yousafzai Malala is a young Pakistani who, from a short age, became an advocate for children’s rights, especially for the right to education. Malala became known for writing a blog, in which she described, for British television BBC, how it was to live under Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan terrorist regime. Promptly, she continued her fight for her ideals by making the documentary, Class dismissed: Malala’s Story. Nonetheless, with the documentary, her name travelled around the globe, which left her under the exposure to terrorists of her country, who considered her an enemy. In October 9th 2012, Malala was victim of an assassination attempt: a supporter of the regime shot her while she traveled on a bus to school. Despite this situation that put her life on risk and that probably she is still under the watch of those who consider her an enemy, Malala is persistent on her activism, now from England where she recently started college at Oxford University. For her great work and remarkable path, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, becoming the youngest person to have received it.

We would have loved to write about more women, because each of us has something special to contribute. For this reason and for you to know the life of other great women, we recommend you to read Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (Cavallo and Favilli, 2016); it is a book that puts together 100 marvelous stories of extraordinary women who dared to challenge the rest of the world in pursuit of their happiness and freedom.
