1. She had German roots on her father side. The name “Frida”; also has German origin and means “peace”.
2. When she was 6, she suffered from polio, which caused an irregular development of her right leg, making it shorter and thinner than normal.
3. Frida had a brutal accident at age of 18: a tramway crashed against the bus in which she was travelling. Throughout her life, she had to struggle with the severe consequences of the accident that weakened her health year after year.
4. Frida is known for having being politically active since her youth. She joined a student group engaged in left wing ideas, called “Los Cachuchas”, when she entered the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria.
5. In 1926, she painted her first self-portrait as a gift to her boyfriend at the time, Alejandro Gómez Arias.
6. Frida lost her longing to be a mother after the tragic bus accident. However, during her stay at the hospital, she created a birth certificate for an imaginary son that she named Leonardo.
7. In 1929, she married artist Diego Rivera. They kept a complex relationship, where both had affairs while still married.
8. Trotsky became Frida’s other great love. After his exile, Mexico granted him political asylum, where he stayed for a while at Frida and Diego’s house.
9. André Breton was fascinated by Frida’s art and he used to call it Mexican surrealism. However, Frida didn’t like her art to be labeled and placed within a category.
10. Her work was taken to Paris, London and the USA. During her visit to the French capital, Frida had the opportunity to meet Pablo Picasso, who gave her a pair of hand-shaped earrings as a gift.
11. Frida created herself an iconic wardrobe that became a statement of her pride of being Mexican. But also, that allowed her to disguise the physical problems caused by polio and the accident.

1. Tiene raíces alemanas por parte de su padre. Su nombre “Frida”; también es de origen alemán y significa “paz”.
2. A los 6 años, sufrió de poliomielitis, lo cual provocó que su pierna derecha no se desarrollara con normalidad, siendo más delgada y corta.
3. A los 18 años, Frida tuvo un brutal accidente: el autobús en el que viajaba fue golpeado por un tranvía. Este suceso la dejaría con severas secuelas a lo largo de su vida.
4. Frida se caracteriza por haber sido una persona muy política desde joven. Cuando ingresó a la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, se unió al grupo estudiantil llamado “Los Cachuchas”, que defendía ideas de izquierda.
